Two gunshots on January 23 resulted in the deaths of seven persons and the gravely injured of one in half moon bay; a guy has been detained in connection with those incidents. The second fatal mass shooting in California in as many days happened without a clear purpose at the time.
On Monday afternoon near Half Moon Bay, there were two different incidents of a mass shooting. Chunli Zhao, the suspect, was discovered in his car in the parking area of the sheriff’s substation. Zhao’s automobile included a semi-automatic weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police recover a semiautomatic handgun from the vehicle of the alleged gunman at the half moon bay incident. It was believed to be the only weapon involved in the shootings. One victim is being treated for life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s office says.
The suspect, Zhao Chunli, 67, was found in his car in the parking lot of a sheriff’s substation in half moon bay, california. The FBI is assisting the sheriff’s office with “assist by providing investigative and forensic resources,” according to a statement.
An eighth person is in critical condition. The suspect has been identified as Chunli Zhao, a 67-year-old Half Moon Bay resident. He is believed to be a worker at either one or both locations, the sheriff says. Law enforcement does not have a motive for the shooting.
Authorities believe Zhao acted alone, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus says. A motive for the shooting spree wasn’t immediately known. Half Moon Bay Councilmember Debbie Ruddock said the victims are Chinese farmworkers; a family reunification center has been set up.
